"I want to grope some breasts." (Reviewing The Comic Artist and His Assistants)

I'm back into the swing of things. A2 has finally actually started, and I'm already very tired. It's a good thing though- it means I'm busy and not just wasting my days away at home and not being productive (like by watching anime all day). That being said, my laziness from the holiday is still very active and I have not been able to do any school work at home as of yet. Owell. I'm sure that once I get over the initial shock (and this sudden cold I seem to have caught), I will be right on track!

This review will be fairly shorter than the previous ones simply because this anime is quite short (ten minutes per episode, twelve episodes long), so there is not much I think I can really comment on.

So...Let's talk about The Comic Artist and His Assistants:

Manga artist and author Yūki Aito is a very perverted man who strives to do what he loves the most, drawing panties. He love of drawing out his extreme fetish towards the female undergarment causes him to be often late on his deadlines. Thankfully, his assistant, Sahoto Ashisu, is very serious in her work ethic and helps complete the workload in anyway she  can. The Comic Artist and His Assistants follows several of Yuki's antics and how his friends/co-workers deal with such a pervert.

Let it be known that Bakuman is my (current) all time favourite manga, and the anime adaptation was pretty cool too. After both of these ended, I was feeling quite empty inside... So I was really excited when I found another anime which revolved around manga artists. To my surprise, The Comic Artist and His Assistants was in no way at all like Bakuman. And that, for the most part, was probably a good thing.

This speaks for itself.
I have never watched a character quite like Yūki before. How can you make such a perverted man be so simple and innocent and honest?! Those character traits just do not make sense together, but somehow it works really well! It just invites the comedy/stupidity, which made me laugh far too much than it should have. His habit of thinking out loud also causes plenty of normally awkward situations which are then made into the funniest of  scenes. "I want to grope some breasts..." is genuinely the first line he says in the whole anime. And don't get me started on the ending song credits. I would love to meet someone like Yūki... I probably wouldn't want to be labelled as their friend, but I'm sure the time I spent with them would be very enjoyable.

Over dramatic is always
the way to go with anime!!1!
Being quite a short anime in terms of episode length, there is not that much time to waste. However, The Comic Artist and His Assistants was very good at keeping things short and snappy, and most importantly, funny. The fact that there was little drag between gags made this comedy anime very easy to digest.
If you were looking for a harem romance anime, this is not the one you are looking for. Yes, there are aspects of those two genres but they are never the main focus. I personally really liked that: it meant I was not getting overly stressed by any harem-like dynamics and I could just laugh at the stupidity that unfolded on my laptop screen.

Evil Sahoto sent  chills down my spine.
I think my heart skipped a beat or something.
Now the issue with having a small time frame is that you do not really get to explore the other characters as deeply as you want to. I really liked Sahoto as a character- she was hard working, down to earth and very driven (and it was fun watching her methods at dealing with her boss's shenanigans). Her goal throughout was to become a published manga artist as well. However, out of the twelve episodes, there are only three or four of them where she is the main focus, often ending in similar cases in which her work is declined for differing reasons. It would have been nice to see some more positive progression of her accomplishing her goals.

(Pst, nosebleeds are what represent boners in anime.)
My final thoughts: do not expect a very serious story in this anime. There are some pleasant heart warming moments here and there, but they are not the main thing that The Comic Artist and His Assistants offer- it is just full to the brim of gags. Slap on the ecchi, and now it is full to the brim with perverted gags. It is the kind of comedy that is so stupid that it becomes funny.

I give The Comic Artist and His Assistants an 7/10 assistants putting up with my perverted jokes about boobs and panties. Watching this was a fun two hours of my life, and has thankfully/hopefully somewhat balanced out the boob to ab ratio on this blog review thing.
(I feel like I should point out that I have never once told a joke relating to boobs or panties... or at least I don't think I have.)
